Mi Barrio Beverley Barbershop wants this website to work for everybody, including people who browse with a screen reader, a keyboard only, a magnifier, or without a mouse. This page says what we have done, what we know is not finished, and how to tell us when something does not work.
The standard we build to
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, level AA. That is the standard United States courts and the Department of Justice refer to, and it is the one this site is written and tested against.
What we have actually tested
Automated checks are not enough on their own — they catch perhaps a third of real problems — so the following were each checked deliberately:
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone. Focus is always visible, a skip link comes first, and the menu and the image viewer trap focus while open, return it where it came from, and close with Escape.
- Every photograph has a written description. Not a filename and not “image of” — a sentence describing what is in it. Decorative marks are hidden from screen readers rather than announced as noise.
- The booking form speaks. Each step announces itself, waiting for available times says so, and an error moves focus to a summary that links to the field it is about. Every field states its own error.
- Booking works without JavaScript. If scripting is off or fails, the form still submits and still books an appointment.
- Text contrast is measured against the rendered page, including text over photographs, rather than against the colours in the stylesheet — which is where contrast checks usually go wrong.
- The page reflows to 320 pixels and to 200% zoom without anything being cut off and without sideways scrolling.
- Animation respects your system setting. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, this site does.
What is not finished
Being straight about this is more useful than claiming perfection:
- This site has been tested with automated tools, by keyboard, and by inspecting what a screen reader is given. It has not yet been tested by a blind person using their own screen reader in their own way, which is the only test that finds everything.
- The map is provided by Google and we do not control how it behaves with assistive technology. The address is written out in text beside it and at the foot of every page, so nothing depends on the map.
- No formal third-party accessibility audit has been carried out.
If something does not work
Call the shop on 917-650-9616 and tell us. You do not need to know why it is broken or what to call it — describing what you were trying to do is enough. We will fix it, and in the meantime we will do whatever you were trying to do on the website with you over the phone: check prices, tell you what is free, and take your booking.
Anything you can do on this site you can do by telephone. Nothing here is the only way to reach us.
